Fake $50 being passed a local stores in the tri-county area

Corbin Police, Kentucky State Police and Laurel County Sheriff’s deputies are working to determine whether the same individuals are responsible for passing or attempting to pass six counterfeit $50 bills in Knox and Laurel counties Sunday and Monday.

According to Corbin Police Major Rob Jones, the department’s public affairs officer, three of the bills, each bearing the same serial number, were passed in Corbin Sunday, at Family Dollar by Kroger, Save-a-Lot at the Trademart Shopping Center, and at Advance Auto Parts on U.S. 25E.

Kentucky State Police were called because of counterfeit 50s passed at O’Reilly Auto Parts and Autozone on U.S. 25E.
Trooper Lloyd Cochran, public affairs officer at Post 11 in London, said troopers have a suspect in the case and have been interviewing the suspect.

“The case will probably be presented to the grand jury after the first of year,” Cochran said, noting troopers are continuing to work to prepare their case.

Laurel County Sheriff’s deputies have video surveillance of the woman who attempted to pass a counterfeit 50 at Ape Yard Market in northern Laurel County.

According to Sheriff John Root, the woman entered the store about 12:45 p.m. and tried to use the bill. However, the clerk determined it was counterfeit and refused to accept it.

Video surveillance from the store shows the woman leaving the store and getting into a red pickup truck that was pulling a trailer.
