Recently released documents have revealed new details surrounding the August 10 incident that cost a Corbin school bus driver, who was charged by police with leaving the scene of an accident, his job in the district.
According to documents obtained from the Corbin Board of Education regarding the situation and explaining why he was terminated, Kirk Bodenweiser not only struck two signs near McKinley Ave. on that day, but he also drove the bus approximately 20 feet into a yard trying to make the turn.
Prior to deviating from his route and striking the signs though, officials say Bodenweiser’s bus remained idle at Corbin Middle School for around 30 minutes after dropping students off at that location.
The document states that Bodenweiser told CMS Principal Ramona Jaynes that his aide was trying to settle down the students before he would leave. Jaynes reported that she did not see nor hear any excessive noise on the bus and told Bodenweiser that he could move on, but he remained parked.
Once the bus finally left CMS and traveled south, he then turned into the parking lot of Hamlin and Kersey, at the intersection of 17th and Main, where the bus was idle for another 30-45 minutes.
After that, Bodenweiser allegedly disregarded his approved route again and dropped students off at Corbin Intermediate and High Schools.
The letter states that during an interview with Supt. Ed McNeel and Asst. Supt. Darrell Tremaine, Bodenweiser was asked to explain why he had deviated from his approved route and traveled on 16th St. It states that Bodenweiser could not remember how or why he was traveling on that street. Some time after that, Bodenweiser was taken in a vehicle by Transportation Director Josh Vannorstran and asked to show him the route he took on Aug. 10, but he could not remember how he traveled then either.
Eventually, parents that were following the bus stopped Bodenweiser and prevented him from continuing the route. One parent got on the bus and removed her child and three others whom she had verbal permission to pick up. Also, somewhere on the route, he was asked if a child was still on the bus and he reported that he wasn’t when in fact he was, which caused a serious concern for the safety of that child.
Bodenweiser pleaded guilty to the criminal charges earlier this month in court and was officially terminated from his position as driver on Aug. 28, .
At the time, McNeel said Bodenweiser wasn’t simply suspended from duty because of hitting the traffic signs, but also because he deviated from the prescribed route.
"It’s not where they were supposed to travel. We are fighting several issues here about what delayed the route," McNeel said at the time of Bodenweiser’s suspension. "From this we’ve already made some changes and are looking at several different procedures. It’s a opportunity for us to make things better."

My child was on that bus that day. The children were released from school at 11am but my mother, who was to pick the children up from the bus that day, waited until 230pm. A couple of parents drove by saying that a bus had wrecked and so she went to see if my son was on it. Sure enough it was his bus and she took him off of it and came home. By this time it was 3pm. I am glad he got fired and I will tell my neighbor who’s child was also on that bus that he got fired and I’m sure she’ll be happy too!
