EXTRA CONTENT: Board approves $8.4 million worth of renovations to Corbin High School

The price tag for massive renovations at Corbin High School was set last week during a special meeting of the school district’s Board of Education.

By a unanimous vote, board members approved $8,417,733 worth of construction for the high school that is to begin soon. Site preparation is already underway.

The board OK’d a base bid package of $7,431,242, and $986,491 to construct an airtight vestibule leading into the gym that will become its front entrance and to construct an amphitheater and landscape the property.

The board did not approve alternates that called for a covered walkway to the Corbin Technology Center (Vocational School), replace the gymnasium floor or to install tubular skylights.

Already approved by state education officials, the project would expand the high school by 40,415 square feet through the construction of two additions – a two-story math and science wing at what is now the front of the school and a multi-level combination of administrative offices, lobbies, band and choral practice rooms in the rear. The overhaul would massively change the appearance and functionality of the school said Kevin Cheek, Project Manager from Sherman-Carter-Barnhart.

Construction is expected to be complete by Fall 2010.

In other business, the board:

¥ Awarded a bid to Whitaker Bank for banking services for 2010.

¥ Declared Corbin East School as surplus property.

¥ Approved a change order for turn lanes near Corbin Primary School for an additional $8,488 for Elza Construction to provide more site work.
