EXCLUSIVE 911 AUDIO: Shooting suspect tells police he’s ‘glad’ victim is dead

"I’ll go to prison over this but it’s worth it."
That is what 55-year-old William Cox told 9-1-1 dispatchers when he called to report that he had shot and killed Ryan Matthew Abner outside his home on Forest Circle Drive Monday afternoon.
Cox went on to tell dispatchers that Abner had hit his daughter with whom Abner had a child.
"He’d been hitting her, beating her up," Cox is heard telling dispatchers in the 9-1-1 call, which may be heard at www.thenewsjournal.com. "I just got tired of it."
Police were called to the scene about 1:45 in response to multiple complaints of shots fired. Upon arrival, Corbin Police Detective Sgt. Rusty Hedrick said they found 21-year-old Abner dead inside the Chevy Equinox SUV, which was stopped in the middle of the street.
Later in the tape, Cox’s daughter, whom police said is 15 years old, is heard in the background crying hysterically.
"What did you do to my husband?" The girl screamed at Cox. "You killed him. I hate you.
"I’m glad he is dead," Cox replied. "He won’t hurt nobody else."
Corbin Police Detective Bill Rose said Abner and the girl may have been engaged, but there is no indication they were married.
According to witness statements, Hedrick said Cox had been standing in a neighbor’s driveway when Abner and Cox’s daughter along with their child came by in the SUV.
A verbal argument ensued between Cox and Abner and as Abner drove off, Cox fired one round from a Glock .40-caliber semi-automatic handgun into the right rear of the SUV.
"Cox had apparently borrowed the gun from a neighbor," Hedrick said.
He later told dispatchers that he had returned the gun to the neighbor, whom he identified as Joe Dobson, after the shooting.
Rose said Cox and Dobson had been talking about Cox buying the gun for some time prior to the incident. However, police will be speaking with Whitley County Commonwealth’s Attorney Allen Trimble to determine whether criminal charges are warranted against Dobson.
Abner got out of the vehicle and began cursing Cox. When Cox began moving toward the vehicle, Abner jumped back in and began to leave.
"Cox ran up to the vehicle and fired multiple rounds through the driver’s side window, striking Abner in the head," Hedrick said. "Cox then went to a neighbor’s house and called 9-1-1 to report the shooting.
"No, he’s dead," Cox is heard telling dispatchers when asked about Abner’s condition. "I shot him good and made sure he’s dead."
Abner was pronounced dead at the scene while Cox was taken into custody.
Cox has been charged with one count of first-degree murder and two counts of wanton endangerment.
At his arraignment Tuesday in Whitley District Court, Cox pleaded not guilty to the charges. He is being held in the Whitley County Detention Center on a $250,000 cash bond.
Hedrick said Cox’s daughter was not injured. A neighbor took care of the couple’s child while the teen was found waiting near the scene when police arrived.
Other neighbors indicated that police were called out to the home at 1103 Forest Circle on a regular basis. Hedrick said investigators are reviewing logs from Corbin dispatch to confirm those statements.
"One neighbor reported it has been going on for as long as two months," Hedrick said.

530.064 Unlawful transaction with a minor in the first degree.
(1) A person is guilty of unlawful transaction with a minor in the first degree when he or she knowingly induces, assists, or causes a minor to engage in:
(a) Illegal sexual activity; or
(b) Illegal controlled substances activity other than activity involving marijuana, synthetic drugs, or salvia, as defined in KRS 218A.010;
Except those offenses involving minors in KRS Chapter 531 and in KRS 529.100 where that offense involves commercial sexual activity.
(2) Unlawful transaction with a minor in the first degree is a:
(a) Class C felony if the minor so used is less than eighteen (18) years old at the time the minor engages in the prohibited activity;

Regardless of what he did it was not the fathers place to deprive someone their life. If he felt there was a threat being presented to the welfare of his child or grandchild he should have followed legal channels to secure a EPO. For anyone to feel that the answer to there problem can be solved with the pull of a trigger should indicate to anyone of sound mind, the depth of which the individual is disturbed. “Southern Justice” as it has been called, is a narrow minded excuse for evading the justice system. I agree than any parent would kill for their child, but only a good parent would kill for the right reason.

I understand a policeman in Corbin was fired for going out with a 15 year old. The Kentucky legal Age of Consent for sexual contact is 16 years old. A total of thirty one states have set their age of consent at 16, the lowest age of consent in any state.
Kentucky law deems any person under the age of 16 as unable to consent to any sexual acts. I understand this father had tried and tried to get help for his daughter. I hate this happen. But again the system let all involed down.

Whenever a person chases someone down and shoots them outside their home and kills them, then a problem exists. Is it premeditated murder or extreme emotional disturbance. The man admitted to killing this man when he called 911 and I think that he may have a legitimate defense. But I am not saying it’s right, it will be up to the jury to decide. No matter what is said here or in the newspaper it all comes down to what the jury will decide. A jury can set him free or send him to the death house.

All of this is so sad. The Father of the girl most likely was already near a nervous breakdown. He loved his daughter and grandchild. The boy should have kept driving and not ran back to talk to the older man. Also, only the boy and girl know what has been going on. If there were signs of abuse and the elderly man saw this, then he most likely was near a nervous breakdown. Loved his daughter. She most likely is a very immature little girl. What appeared to be happiness weeks ago, months ago could have changed. Sometimes couples like this just sluff if off to loved ones and say a little fight here and there. No man hits a woman ever. I totally agree, there were many available options with the daughter being a minor the father could have pressed domestic charges against the boy for beating on his daughter IF that were even true! Taking the life of a 21yr old does NOT justify what he may or may not have done wrong! He doesn’t deserve to be dead! He does have parents & siblings & aunts uncles the whole 9 yards, this is a VERY sad situation & the person who suffers the most is the little baby who like said here now has no father or grandfather. How do you explain to a child & make them understand that their grandfather shot & killed their father? I am Ryan’s Aunt and just saw him his girlfriend and new Baby in July we stopped in while traveling to Cincinnati on Vacation Ryan was Better than I had seen him in a long time, he was proud of himself and had even told me how this new Baby had Changed EVERYTHING in his Life! It’s so very hard to get daughter’s out of abusive relationships. They seem to be so psychologically brainwashed by the abuser, that they still think he “loves” her. I say amen to the father that put one of the abusers down. Sad thing is, the daughter will hate her father and chances are, she will get herself a replacement abuser. These type of girls seem to just keep going after the same type of men. When abuse occurs and is reported, both the abuser and the one being abused needs counseling. It’s a shame that our children place us in situations where we might need to kill some idiot over them. I suspect that daughter has a rough road ahead of her.

I can’t believe how this 911 call went, or how long it took for an officer to get to the scene and them so close to town. As a parent myself, I don’t believe anyone should be making judgment. Maybe killing the boy wasn’t the answer, but I can understand how a dad can be pushed beyond logic when his daughter has been beat on. Hearing what he said about the boy’s parents, and that cops have been called out numerous times (obviously doing nothing), he probably felt like he was out of options.
Don’t judge, on either side, until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes. This family needs prayers. Think of the young girl and her baby who have lost so much.

Plus in the tape you can hear Mr. Cox say “he threatened to kill me”. 15 yr olds get pregnant a lot, and Dads get mad, but if they get beat on…Mad becomes furious.
Someone protecting their child from violence or abuse would never fire a handgun into the vehicle the child and grandchild was inside. My heart goes out to all those who lost a son, a brother, a fiance, and a father. My prayers are with you.

She was 15, had a child, and was probably madly in love with him. Murder is not justified, however I am a mother and a grandmother and I would protect my daughter anyway I could if that was the case. The baby has not father, and now her father is in jail. It is a shame, the father should have gone and beat the living crap out of him instead, but not murder.

Until people know the real story why is it being judged already? Ryan was someones son and brother and if the abuse was really happening why did she stick around ? Who is to say she wouldn’t have wound up dead eventually? Who is to say that baby wouldn’t have ended up at the hospital with broken bones and bruises? Any parent would kill over their kid.
This same type of scenario occured off the Falls Road at the home of Bill Sosh about 30 plus years ago. The boyfriend/husband had been abusing Sosh’s daughter and Bill shot and killed him in the driveway of his home. Jury verdict: not guilty? I can’t remember but he didn’t go to jail. What will happen? Domesic violence is awful and when the police and courts can’t protect the people who will.
