For the second straight year, enthusiasts of the odd-shaped, all-in-one cooking device called “The Big Green Egg” will be filling downtown Corbin with the delectable smells of their favorite mouth-watering recipes this Saturday during the second Annual Moonbow Eggfest.
The event will open to the general public around 9:00 a.m., when the “lighting of the eggs” will take place, and will run until 3:00 p.m. It will be held on the municipal parking lot behind Sanders Park along Monroe Street.
“Right now, we have right at 40 cooks that will be coming to Corbin. We think we are at our max. That’s as many as we can handle,” said Tim Barnes, President of Hometown Bank and one of the main organizers of Moonbow Eggfest.
“We’ve gone out over the last year and go to these other Eggfests and cooked there and recruited cooks,” Barnes added. “I think our event was very well received last year for a first-year event. It’s going to be even better this year.”
“Fatman” Kevin Jenkins of the popular national radio show “Chef and the Fatman” will be taping a broadcast from Moonbow
Eggfest. Barnes said the show airs on Sundays and is available to millions of listeners on Sirius/XM satellite radio and can be streamed online at www.chefandthefatman.com.
Jenkins will be honored as a Corbin Colonel at the event
There will also be a DJ providing live music. Classes will also be offered throughout the day to help people learn how to use their Big Green Eggs.
The Southern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce will also offer beer and wine at the event.
Admission to Moonbow Eggfest is $15 for adults and $10 for kids. For $25, those who go can also get a special event t-shirt.
Admission entitles anyone to sample food cooked on the eggs for the duration of the event.
Barnes said all the participants in the event will be cooking different items (i.e. chicken wings, bar-b-que pork and beef, brisket, steaks, sliders, etc.) and those who attend can buy a ticket that will entitle them to a small tasting of everything being prepared. Last year, he cooked “poor man’s steak,” which is smoked bologna, and mac and cheese. He also makes what is called “triple threat dessert” which consists of three different kinds of chocolate and peanut butter.
The Big Green Egg is an egg-shaped dome cooker that uses natural wood or charcoal as fuel. Its design allows it to be used for a variety of different cooking styles from grilling and smoking to baking and more.
About 250 people bought tickets for last year’s eggfest, and Barnes is expecting more this year. The Corbin Tourism and Convention Commission is one of the main sponsors of the event, along with the City of Corbin.
“We are hoping people will come downtown and enjoy Eggfest, but that they will also shop downtown and do whatever,” Barnes said. “We hope it brings a lot of people to our town.”
Moonbow Eggfest is being held in tandem with the Corbin Color Run 5k Race that will start on Depot Street at 9:00 a.m.
