Earth Week celebration starts Saturday

Earth Week festivities will kick off Saturday in Williamsburg with the Mother Earth Bicycle Ride followed by a movie in the park.

Registration for the bicycle ride starts at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Bill Woods Park followed by a bicycle safety talk at 4 p.m. The ride will start at 4:30 p.m.

The registration fee is $5 per person or $15 for a family of more than four people.

There will be fun festivities at the park Saturday including food vendors, face painting and great learning opportunities for how to save our planet, according to Cortney Moses, Whitley County Agent for Fine Arts.

Following the bike ride, there will be a free movie in Bill Woods Park starting about 8:30 p.m., which is sponsored by the Whitley County Public Library.

There will be free refreshments during the movie but attendees will want to bring their own lawn chairs or blankets.

During Saturday’s bicycle ride, community residents can pick up their Earth Week Passport for more information about Earth Week.

Passports can also be picked up at the following locations in Williamsburg: the mayor’s office, the Whitley County Public Library, the Whitley County Health Department, the Whitley County Fine Arts Center, which is located across the street from city hall, and the Whitley County Extension Office, which is temporarily located at Cumberland Regional Mall due to construction.

Throughout next week, people can get their passports stamped at a different location each day from 3 – 6 p.m., including:

• Monday, April 18 – the Williamsburg Mayor’s Office.

• Tuesday, April 19 – the W.D. Bryant & Son True Value hardware store in Williamsburg.

• Wednesday, April 20 – the recycling receptacle, which is located between Cumberland Regional Mall and the Williamsburg Fire Department.

• Thursday, April 21 – the Farmer’s Market in Bill Woods Park.

• Friday, April 22 – the Whitley County Health Department.

Passports with at least one space filled in can be turned in Friday at the Extension Community Arts Center between 3:30 and 7:30 p.m. Friday for an Earth Day t-shirt. Passports with all five spaces filled will be entered into a drawing.

The Earth Week celebration will culminate Friday with an art reception at the Whitley County Fine Arts Center from 3:30 – 7:30 p.m. In addition to the art show there will be refreshments and live music.
