Early morning fire damages Emlyn mobile home
Emlyn Volunteer Fire Department Chief Matt Witt said firefighters are uncertain about what caused an early morning fire Friday at a mobile home but that foul play is not suspected.
A neighbor reported the fire to 911 about 4:13 a.m. at 826 Happy Hollow Road.
"Herbert Church is the guy, who lived there. He had left about 3 a.m. I think his wife was ill," Witt said. "A neighbor heard the car door slam about 3 a.m. When she got up about 4 a.m., she looked over and saw smoke coming out of the home."
Initially, firefighters feared that one person might still be inside the mobile home because the neighbor only heard one car door slam.
Firefighters made a forced entry into the home and determined no one was inside. They discovered the fire in the bathroom and quickly extinguished it.
"We did a good knock down on the fire. The bedroom and living room are still intact. The only damage was to a small bathroom in the back," Witt added.
Witt said firefighters aren’t sure what caused the blaze. They don’t think it was an electrical shortage, but Witt said it is possible Church may have left something or a maybe a cigarette burning.
About half a dozen Emlyn firefighters and four Williamsburg firefighters responded to the blaze.
"It’s always good to have neighbors to help you if you need it," Witt added.
The owners of the rental property was Larry and Fannie Taylor.
