Driver who crashed into Corbin storage buildings being sought by police
A one-vehicle accident near the entrance to a Corbin subdivision caused about $20,000 worth of damage to storage buildings owned by one local businessman, and authorities say they are still searching for the driver who is responsible for the crash.
Police were notified of the crash at the junction of Alsip Trail and Riva Ridge Trail at about 10:00 p.m. Friday. The roads are near the entrance of Tattersall Trails Estates subdivision.
According to Whitley County Sheriff’s Deputy Alan Onkst, a 2004 GMC Sierra failed to stop at the intersection of the two roads and left the roadway, and then traveled 200 feet before ramming into Bubba’s Stow and Go – a storage building facility in the area. The truck also tore down a fence surrounding the facility.
According to the passerby who reported the incident, a man was seen running from the wreck toward Corbin Primary School, located on Fifth Street Road. Police were unable to locate anyone.
The truck was registered to Elmo Greer and Sons, Inc. of London. Onkst said he contacted company officials and was able to determine whom the vehicle was assigned to, but further investigation revealed that person might not have actually been the driver during the wreck.
"We know who he is, possibly a relative of the person the truck is assigned to," Onkst said. "We suspect that perhaps alcohol could have been involved in the accident and that is why the individual ran."
Onkst said he believes there may have been a passenger in the car as well.
Ron Bowling, owner of Bubba’s Stow and Go, estimated damage done to the fence and buildings at $15,000 to $20,000. A contractor had to be called to the site the evening of the accident to make temporary repairs to secure the facility and to keep weather from adversely affecting items stored in one of the building’s units.
