District Wiin
Whitley County coach Larry Anderson said last week that the new 50th district has a lot of balance and the teams need to win at home to keep pace.
His Lady Colonels did that Tuesday night with a 54-45 win over the South Laurel Lady Cardinals at Whitley County.
“This district is very balanced,” Anderson said. “If everyone wins their home games and someone gets a road win that is the team that will get the number one seed.”
Seniors Stephanie McCullah and Kayla Haynes supplied a lot of leadership as Whitley County got its home court district win to go 1-1 on the young season.
McCullah led the Lady Colonels with 15 points while Haynes tossed in 14 points to lead the pack.
Whitley County jumped out to the lead and eased ahead 15-8 by the end of the first quarter on a pair of Amanda Brimm free throws.
South Laurel charged back and cut the lead to three (17-14) before Heather Jones and Haynes scored back to back baskets, pushing the lead to 21-14 with 4:12 in the half.
The Lady Cards pulled back within two (21-19) but Whitley County eased back on top at the half, 28-22.
In the second half, South Laurel’s Lauren Wombles caught fire and pulled the Lady Cards within four (36-32), forcing Anderson to call a timeout.
Haynes took control and helped Whitley County outscore South Laurel 7-1 for a 43-33 lead.
Whitley County never trailed and held on for the win.
“I thought the kids really picked it up after that timeout,” said Anderson.
Whitley County will be off until Tuesday when they host the Lady Jackets of Williamsburg.
