DISTRICT SHOWDOWN
The Corbin Redhounds battled their way to the 31st District Soccer Tournament finals with a 3-2 overtime win over the Mountaineers of Oneida Baptist Thursday night. The win came in the five-minute sudden death period.
Senior forward Cameron Lambert scored the winning goal with 3:23 left in sudden death. Lambert also scored in the first half after OBI put the first goal on the scoreboard. His tying goal came with 8:45 in the opening half.
The Redhounds took a 2-1 lead when Lambert was tripped in the box and he nailed a penalty kick past the Oneida goal keeper at the 34:58 mark.
Corbin Coach Armondo Cima felt his team relaxed in the final twenty minutes and just played to keep the lead. “We didn’t play with the same intensity as we did in the overtme periods,” he said.
The teams played two ten-minute overtimes and dominated the play, but couldn’t get a goal past Evan Bracewell.
Corbin scored the winning goal on a throw in by senior Drew Farley. Brody Freeman took the ball and passed it to Lambert in front of the net for the victory.
Corbin (7-9-1) saw a four-game losing streak snapped. They Redhounds will play South Laurel for the district title tonight at 8 p.m. The winner and runner-up will advance to the 16th Region Tournament.
Last season the Redhounds lost a shootout in the region finals to South Laurel. The two teams have dominated the regional tournament the last eight years. Corbin or South Laurel has won the region each of those years. The teams have been in the region finals five out of the last seven seasons.
