The Williamsburg Yellow Jackets can celebrate their second district football championship in the last three years. Williamsburg knocked off district rival Lynn Camp, 20-0 and will take the number one seed to the playoffs, November 5.
It was a defensive battle in the first half as the teams jockeyed for field position. Williamsburg was able to put together a successful drive late in the first quarter to get on the scoreboard. Sophomore quarterback Logan Hamblin went around the left end on a 10-yard run to put the Yellow Jackets on top, 6-0.
“We made a lot of mistakes and stalled a couple of times in the red zone,” said Williamsburg Coach Jerry Herron. “We need to be more focused in the red zone.”
The Yellow Jackets defense played a stellar game and shut down the Wildcats’ offensive attack. In four district games, the Yellow Jackets have allowed only 32 points, eight points per game while averaging 39 points.
Hamblin stretched the lead to 12 points in the third quarter when he scored on a four-yard run. Hamblin, who rushed the ball 19 times for 1126 yards, had a hand on the third touchdown that put the game away.
He hit senior J.P. Payne on a 41-yard pass play to put the Yellow Jackets ahead, 18-0. Hamblin then scored the two-point conversion for the final margin.
Travis Thomas had 14 carries in the game for 74 yards as the Yellow Jackets had 208 yards on the ground.
Hamblin connected on 10-of-24 passes for 177 yards and one touchdown against the Wildcats. Payne had five catches for 111 yards while Chris Lowrie had four catches for 58 yards.
Defensively, Kevin Hoffman, Andrew Root and Cody Perkins led the Yellow Jackets. Hoffman had 11 tackles while Root had 10 tackles and four assists. Perkins had seven tackles, five of which were for losses.
“I thought we played very well on defense,” added Herron. “Anytime you can hold Lynn Camp out of the end zone, you are doing something right.”
The Yellow Jackets will have the week off while Lynn Camp host the Berea Pirates in a game that will decide the three and four seeds in the district race.
Williamsburg will have the week off and Herron plans to use it as a “homework” session. “We want to let the kids get caught up on their academics with a little time off before we prepare for Pineville,” said Herron.
The 6-3 Yellow Jackets can close out the regular season with seven wins with a victory over the Mountain Lions. “I know they have a good running back and a good football team,” said Herron.
