DISTRICT CHAMPIONS

The Whitley County Lady Colonels won their first 51st District Volleyball championship Tuesday night with a 2-0 win over the Knox Central Lady Panthers.
Whitley County moved into the district this season when the KHSAA realigned all of the Kentucky regions. The Lady Colonels played in a three-team district with Whitley County taking the number one seed after going 4-0 against Knox Central and Lynn Camp.
Whitley County won the matches, 25-5, 12-11. It was the 20th win of the season for the Lady Colonels, who move onto the 13th Region next week at Knox Central was one of the district champions. They will play a district runner-up in the first-round.
"I’m really happy with the way our team played tonight,” said Whitley County Coach David Halcomb. “Knox Central is much improved from when we played them earlier in the season, and our kids new that from watching them Monday night against Lynn Camp.”
“Our entire team came out focused and took care of business – we played a complete game,” said Halcomb. “We knew we could dominate the net play and we were able to do that due to good passing, which enabled Carley (Louthan) to set the ball on the net to our hitters.”
“It’s great to be district champions again, and this was our 20th win, which was a one of our preseason goals. This is the first step of what we want to accomplish this year – now we will start preparing for next week’s Regional Tournament."
District winners Jackson County, South Laurel, Harlan County and Whitley County will represent the 13th region. The district runners-up are Clay County, Corbin, Knox Central and Bell County.
