Deputies recover stolen gun, arrest one

A Whitley County Sheriff’s deputy recovered a stolen firearm and arrested a Williamsburg man following a routine traffic stop late Thursday evening on Perkins Street in the Woodbine community, according to a sheriff’s department release and court documents.

Deputies recovered this gun, suspected methamphetamine, and needle.

Sgt. Jonas Saunders arrested Jason A. Carr, 32, of Williamsburg, and charged him with receiving stolen property-firearm, first-degree possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine), possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, no auto insurance, improper registration plate, failure to produce vehicle insurance card, and no registration plate.

Saunders was in the area about 9 p.m. because extra patrols were requested due to vehicles speeding at that location, according to an arrest citation.

Carr’s 2002 black Pontiac was stopped for allegedly traveling at a high rate of speed, and Carr pulled into the driveway of a residence of someone that he did not know. A criminal background

check revealed that Carr had four active warrants for his arrest, according to an arrest citation.

Saunders searched Carr and found rolling papers inside a back pocket.

Carr told police there was a gun inside the center console of the vehicle, and deputies found a black Taurus 9 mm pistol that had been reported stolen from Laurel County, a citation stated.

In the passenger’s side floor of the vehicle, police found a small bag of suspected methamphetamine/ice. Police also recovered one hypodermic needle, an arrest citation stated.

Ice is an extremely pure and potent form of methamphetamine.

Carr was lodged in the Whitley County Detention Center.
