‘Dance to Be Fit’ returns to The Corbin Center beginning Thursday
One of the most common New Year’s resolutions is to lose weight and help with the exercise portion is available beginning Thursday night as the “Dance to Be Fit” begins at The Corbin Center.
The hour-long Zumba style class started in 2017 under the direction of Shannon Rimas.
“People of any fitness level can do this,” Rimas said of the classes that she described as a mixture of dance, Zumba and other different things designed to increase your heart rate. “You adjust the moves to what is comfortable to you.”
Rimas said before a new dance begins, she goes through all of the steps to ensure the participants are familiar with the routine.
“If you have been there before, you will be extra good. If you haven’t been there before, you won’t be left behind,” Rimas said.
Rimas said class sizes ranged from approximately 20 to as many as 45.
The class is open to women and men.
“There are a lot of people in the class that have had knee replacement surgery,” Rimas said. “We give them alternatives to some of the moves to accommodate that. As long as they are having fun and moving, that is the point.”
Rimas said she understands one of the most intimidating things for people when it comes to joining a fitness class is seeing the instructor and others who are in great shape.
“This is my weight loss journey as well,” Rimas said. “I’m a normal girl. I’m not super fit.”
“We are there to encourage one another.”
Rimas said classes begin at 6 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday.
The cost of each class is $3.
Thursday is the first class of the new year and to celebrate, a live DJ is coming in to provide the music. The cost for Thursday’s class will be $4.
