Cumberland Falls cleanup on March 27
The PRIDE Spring Cleanup is scheduled for Saturday, March 27 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Cumberland Falls State Park.
Participants will be picking up litter on Highway 90.
“We are excited about the Cumberland Falls Cleanup,” said Whitley County Judge-Executive Pat White. “They are planning on proceeding with it with some adjustments to the normal event to be safe during COVID.”
Last year’s Spring cleanup was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We are thrilled that we are going to be able to do the Spring Cleanup this year,” said Maggy Kriebel, the director of Corbin Tourism. “As you can imagine, where we had to can the event last year due to Coronavirus, the amount of trash and litter that has built up inside and around the park is atrocious.”
Kriebel said the clean up is a big event for the park.
“The annual cleanup is a really big event for the park, and in our eyes, Cumberland Falls is one of the top attractions in the city,” said Kriebel. “Of course, not only do we want the parks to be clean and pristine for the people that are visiting the park, we also want people to love and take care of and appreciate their public land.”
The Cumberland Falls Cleanup event will feature the annual Cleanup Cup competition between Whitley and McCreary Counties, said Amber Owens, the director of county projects. The winner is determined by which county has the most participants in the cleanup. Whitley County has won the competition for the last several years.
Partners for the event include Cumberland Falls State Resort Park, Eastern Kentucky PRIDE, Inc., McCreary County Fiscal Court 109 Board, Whitley County Fiscal Court, U.S. Forest Service, McCreary County Tourism and Whitley County Tourist Commission.
Pre-registration forms can be picked up the Corbin Library, Corbin Tourism Office, Whitley County Courthouse, McCreary County Library and McCreary County Tourism Office. The cleanup is a required event for individuals who plan to participate in the Litter Lieutenants program this year.
