Corn Hole Tournament

New year, new champions. The second News Journal Corn Hole Tournament was another success. News Editor Trent Knuckles and I watched 21 teams battle for the $500 cash prizes, $350 for first and $150 for second.
Again it was out-of-town teams that came in and swept the cash. The winners were Shawn Short and Darrin Hill of Hillsboro, Ohio. Short and Hill beat Steve Brady (New Haven, Ky) and Lester Price of Elizabethtown in the championship game19-21, 21-10, 21-7. The tournament was over at approximately 11:45 and it looked for a while that the runners-up were going to push the championship game into another set.
It was good to see a few teams back from last year including defending champion Mark Rice. His partner this year was his brother, Wayne.
The best local finish was Jason Prewitt and Kenneth Veach, the pair was third last year. We’re honoring the pair with a subscription to the News Journal.
The youngest participants were Jacob and Jason Wells of Corbin, a 12-year-old and 10-year-old pair of brothers. They didn’t finish last. They were tied for 17th.
For the second straight year we had some really nice compliments and no complaints as far as I know. At least none reported.
Most of the participants said it was one of the bigger tournaments that they have been too. We had some good suggestions on how to make the tournament better. I’m sure Trent and I will take them into consideration next year. We’re thinking of possibly a high school division so that the players under 18 have a chance to win.
There were several people who made the tournament a success and we want to thank them. First of all Sid Strunk, thank you for allowing us to use your boards and the scoreboards. The scoreboards were a nice touch to the tournament. He sells them for $15 each.
Thanks to Wyatt’s Car Auto Detailing for letting us use their lot again this year. It makes things so convenient when you can run next door if you need something. Thanks Linda Carpenter for all the work you did on making signs and a lot of other behind the scenes work preparing for the tournament.
Even though I missed my football scrimmages, I had a good time.
Congratulations to the winners and hope to see you back next year.
