Corbin’s ‘Roastin’ Redhounds’ open state competition against Taylor County

Corbin High School’s, “Roastin’ Redhounds” will be back in the kitchen this morning as they compete against Taylor County in the first round of the Junior Chef state tournament in Louisville.

The team of Kendell Lewis, Rachel Standifer and Sierra Johnson will be preparing their buffalo chicken squash and zucchinni boat featuring lettuce tomatoes and strawberry apple salsa, earned the right to compete in the state competition by defeating Whitley County in the District competition and Harlan County in the 13^th Region Competition.

This marks the fifth year Corbin High School has fielded a team in the Junior Chef Competition and the fourth time the Redhounds have reached the state competition.

Corbin had its best showing in 2017, finishing second to champion Montgomery County.

The team is coached by culinary arts teacher Jessica Lester.

“I give them all the credit in the work. I told them at the beginning that if they are willing to put in the work, I am willing to show them everything they need to do to be successful,” Lester said. “A lot of work and practice has gone into it, but they have it down to a choreographed dance.”
