Corbin’s litter problem gets full-time staff

The fight against litter along Corbin’s roadways not has its own full-time staff.

At Monday’s meeting of the Corbin City Commission, Public Works Director Gary Kelly said the three-person crew has been working almost daily since Feb. 5 and has collected 238 bags of trash, 27 tires, a mattress, a shopping cart, a barrel, two deer and a dog.

“We are starting with the major roads and working our way down,” Kelly said.

Kelly said one area that has proven to be a problem is the Corbin bypass.

According to records on collections provided by Kelly, the crew collected 46 bags of trash over a two-day period on the bypass, Feb. 7 and Feb. 9.

The crew returned to the bypass on Feb. 14 and collected another 21 bags of trash.

Other areas the crew has worked includes: Gordon Hill (eight bags), Fourth and Fifth Streets (10 bags), Cumberland Falls Hwy. (46 bags over two days), Maple Lane, Seventh Street, and Depot Street (18 bags), Barton Mill and Vanbeber (17 bags), Bishop Street and Mitchell Street, (32 bags) and Seventh Street (20 bags).

“You can tell a difference,” Commissioner Trent Knuckles said pointing to the Gordon Hill area as a prime example.

Kelly said the workers are seasonal employees for now and the efforts would continue.
