Corbin woman dies after being struck by truck while walking along KY 26 in Woodbine

A Corbin woman died early Friday morning, hours after she was struck by a pickup truck while walking along KY 26 in Woodbine with her boyfriend.
Brittany Childress, 20, was pronounced dead at 4:57 a.m. Friday at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville. At about 9:20 p.m. Thursday, she and her boyfriend, Bradley Powers, 21, of Williamsburg, were walking south on the side of the northbound lane when the accident happened.
According to Whitley County Sheriff Colan Harrell, 62-year-old Vernon Dye, of Woodbine, was driving south on KY 26 and was in the process of passing a couple of vehicles when he spotted the couple. He tried to avoid them. Powers jumped out of the way. Childress was unable to avoid being hit.
"He didn’t know they were there," Harrell said. "He was doing everything legally. He tried to avoid them … Really we see it as just a terrible happening. It was an accident."
Harrell said he does not believe any criminal charges will be filed against Dye. Drugs or alcohol are not suspected as factors in the crash. Likewise, Harrell said Dye did not appear to be speeding at the time.
A local EMT, Jacob Fox, came up on the accident and immediately asked for assistance. Childress was flown to the University of Tennessee Medical Center via an Air-Evac Lifeteam medical helicopter. Powers was taken to Baptist Regional Medical Center in Corbin as a precaution, but was not seriously injured. Harrell said Powers was not struck by the vehicle.
Childress was a graduate of Corbin High School and was employed at the McDonald’s on Cumberland Falls Hwy. She was the mother of a young daughter, Breonna Childress. Coworkers said she would often walk to work.
Whitley County Sheriff’s Deputy Sgt. Ken Shepherd investigated the accident. He was assisted by fellow deputies Joe Prewitt and Shawn Jackson, along with members of the Woodbine Volunteer Fire Department and Whitley County EMS.

I am Brittany’s Cousin Kara… I miss her and she was walking home from my house for those who dont know… I didnt go to school for a few days and i was depressed for weeks and still am. I dont even care anymore if i had a birthday… most of you posted the day of my birthday she died a day before my birthday I did nothing that day but sit and read.
How come? Sorry i know the story and i was friends with britt. I just dont understand how come his life is ruined?
How is Breonna doing? I know it must be hard on her not to see mommy.
This was a very sad accident, and I REALLY don’t think the driver was at fault. They were OBVIOUSLY in the road and not being cautious. How in the heck could anyone blame the driver for this? Think about it!!!!

bradley..i can not even think of what u are going though. i don’t know what happen but the blame game will not bring her back. i had went to school with her dad and was very close to her aunt and mamaw at one time. if u need help getting though this i know were a place u can go to get help and it free. just let me know. i am sorry for your’ll loss. a life gone to soon.

this is a f***en lie powers didnt jump i know him he tryed to push her down the hill so she wouldnt get hit but he wasnt fast enough he tryed his best and powers was struck his foot was struck by the tire and the people forcest away from childress he whanted to be by her side but now he is scared for life becuse of u all and he blames his self now. thank you. thank u all!!!..
This is a tragic tragedy and accidents do happen, but when things like this happens the individuals needs to be accounted for. I drive 26 everyday and evening. I come home from work sometimes at midnight and I can see clearly unless it is foggy out. There is a 4 year old child that now doesn’t have a mother because she was walking home with her boyfriend. I say if you can’t see what is coming then you shouldn’t be passing other vehichles. I want to let Chris and his family know that if there is anything we can do just call. You are like family and we are here for support. May God watch over your family while you grieve through this process. Everyone needs to be accountable for what they do rather an accident or not. I can’t believe that they are considering this a freak accident and no charges being set. Something needs to be done.
