In a low-scoring defensive contest, the Whitley County Colonels held off arch-rival Williamsburg, 46-41 Tuesday night at Lawson Gym.
It could have been labeled the Petrey-Payne Hour as the two big men battled hard to to give their respective teams the win.
Petrey tossed in 10 points and grabbed 15 rebounds while Payne had 16 points for the Yellow Jackets.
In a low-scoring first quarter Petrey had four of the nine points posted by the Colonels.
Williamsburg managed just five points.
The Colonels (10-3) picked up the pace and outscored the Jackets 14-9 in the second quarter and led 23-13 at the half.
The Colonels tried to get the blow out when they ran out to an 11-point lead (34-23) thanks to a Dustin Paul 3-pointer.
However, the Jackets fought back behind Payne and cut the lead to three (39-36) when the senior went inside for a basket with 4:10 left in the game.
The Colonels hit just enough free throws down the stretch to hold off the Jackets.
The Jackets trailed by three (44-41) when Jared Barton hit a 3-pointer, but two free throws by Shawn Harris with :15 left iced the game.
Donnie Butcher led the Colonels with 12 points.
Redhounds Blast Middlesboro
The Corbin Redhounds scored the first 14 points of the game and went on to rout the Middlesboro Yellow Jackets, 71-40 at Gilliam Gym Tuesday night.
Senior guard Brody Freeman took charge in the first quarter scoring 12 of the 20 points as the Redhound roared out to a 20-11 lead.
The Redhounds (9-4) scored those first 14 points with the help of Matthew Taylor, Travis Smith, Taylor Jones and Freeman.
Middlesboro (2-9) got their first basket of the game with 3:50 left in the opening quarter on a basket by Cameron Rancher.
Middlesboro cut the lead back to ten (16-6) before Freeman added back-to-back baskets for a 20-6 margin.
The Yellow Jackets closed out the period with a 3-pointer by Austin Baker and a basket by Rancher for the 20-11 deficit.
The Redhounds continued to pour it on in the second quarter by scoring the first 10 points as sophomore center Robbie Igo tossed in four points to pace Corbin.
Corbin stretched the lead to twenty by halftime, 40-20.
The third quarter started much like the first and second period with Corbin going on a 15-0 run. The Hounds led 55-20 before Middlesboro scored with 3:10 left in the quarter.
Freeman led the ‘Hounds with 14 points in the win.
