Corbin trolley rollout delayed

The Corbin Trolley is now expected to hit the streets later this month.

The trolley is painted and has been repaired. The stop signs are printed and ready to be hung. Corbin Main Street Manager Andy Salmons said as soon as the drivers are ready, the trolley will roll.

Salmons explained that one of the two drivers hired in early October, Joe Breacher had some personal issues with which he is currently deal, leaving him temporarily unavailable.

The second driver, David Pennington, is completing his training to secure his commercial drivers license (CDL) certification to drive passenger vehicles.

“He is in week three of the four to six week training program,” Salmons said of Pennington.

Salmons said he has received additional applications, several of which are from individuals who already have a CDL.

If one of those applicants is hired, the trolley could at least run on a part-time basis on the weekends.

As to when that may be, Salmons said the new goal is to have the trolley running before Thanksgiving.

“Things are still on track,” Salmons said explaining that Corbin Public Works employees will install the signs denoting the stops several days prior to startup.

Even with the delay, Salmons said he has heard from multiple people who are anxious to see what the trolley brings to Corbin.

“We are trying to build a good city where people want to live, where people want to invest and where people want to visit,” Salmons said.

Corbin downtown purchased the trolley from Eastern Kentucky University for $6,325 in July 2015.

The trolley, which has received a new paintjob since it was purchased, is only display next to Sanders Park.

Salmons said it can accommodate 30 people at a time.

The trolley route will encompass up to 16 stops between the hotels off of exit 25 and Trademart Shopping Center and back.

The trolley will make the loop approximately every 45 minutes.
