Corbin Tourism officials take first step toward hiring a director
Before the Corbin Tourism Commission can determine who is the best candidate for the job of tourism director, commission members and potential applicants must know what the job entails, what the commission is looking for from the applicants and how that person will be selected.
After an executive session lasting more than one hour Monday, the commission members voted to create a three-person sub-committee made up of Suzy Razmus, Nick Greive and Kyle Perkins.
"We have got to come up with a job description," Razmus said, noting the only thing commission members have at the moment is an abstract idea of what the tourism director will do and the skills necessary to do the job.
"We have to figure out the best way to go about finding the person because we want to make the best decision."
Razmus said she has spoken with Tour SEKY about the director’s position along with other municipalities who have a tourism director in place.
"We have a job description for the position from Mt. Vernon and will be asking for others," Razmus said.
Razmus said there is no timetable for when the committee will report to the commission with its findings or to have the director in place.
"There are a world of possibilities," Razmus said of the tourism director’s position. "We have to see how the puzzle pieces will fit together."
In other business the commission:
¥ Agreed to give $25,000 to Nibroc to help fund lighting, sound and stage equipment.
¥ Agreed to lower rent to use the Corbin Civic Center from $450 to $300 for for-profit organizations and to $150 for non-profit organizations.
¥ Agreed to speak with city officials about Sherea Meyers representing Corbin at the Daniel Boone County tourism booth at the World Equestrian Games in Lexington.
Razmus said Meyers has already gone through the necessary steps to receive her credentials and it is too late to have another person go through the process. The booth will be operated by representatives from different communities in what is known as "Daniel Boone" country in Kentucky. Each representative is scheduled to work 32 hours during the three-week event.
However, Meyers’ hours have been cut back. Several commission members indicated they would be agreeable to working with the city financially to allow Meyers to attend.
¥ Approved the donation of $1,000 to help sponsor the Cumberland Falls Invitational Basketball Tournament and the Whitley County Fair.
