Corbin teenager emerges from coma
A 16-year-old Corbin High School student injured in an All Terrain Vehicle accident April 17 is out of a coma and has been moved to a rehabilitation center in Lexington.
Holli Logan-Delph was moved from the University of Kentucky Medical Center to Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Center Tuesday morning, her grandmother Jean Delph said, to begin the long process of recovery. Doctors had kept her in a drug-induced coma since she fell off the back of an ATV during a family outing in Mt. Vernon in order to reduce swelling in her brain.
She was brought out of the coma April 27, her mother’s birthday.
“The doctor didn’t give them any hope or anything until the 27th and he came out and told them that she was going to come through,” Jean Delph said.
Her father, Charlie Delph, said Holly and her cousin were riding on the ATV when the two decided to switch places. Family members think somehow, Holly was thrown off the vehicle when the accelerator was accidentally mashed down. She struck her head on rocks in empty railway bedding, and also suffered a lacerated liver and a deflated lung.
Her grandmother said Holli still can’t speak (because of a tracheal tube still inserted in her neck), but is able to acknowledge when she’s being spoken to. She is also unable to walk. Early scans showed no signs of brain damage, Jean Delph said, but further test are yet to be performed.
“I don’t know how much therapy she will have to have. The doctor said in the beginning it would probably be 18 months, but she’s progressed so fast and is doing so good I don’t think it will be that long.”
When Holli Delph was first airlifted to the University of Kentucky Medical Center she had to be revived by doctors.
Holli’s mother and father have been by her side since the accident.
A special fund has been set up at Tri-County National Bank in Corbin to help defray the cost of medical bills for the family. Anyone who wishes to contribute to the Holli Logan-Delph Recovery Fund is encouraged to call Charlie or Patty Delph at 528-7985 or 344-1644, Kim Main at 523-0821, 215-6987 or Tri-County National Bank at 528-9990.
