Corbin takes fourth
The Corbin Redhounds finished fourth in the 20th Annual Cumberland Falls Invitational, beating Byrnes, South Carolina, 76-64.
The Redhounds just off a third place finish in the Marlins Holiday Classic in Florida, lost to unbeaten Shelby Valley 79-74 in the opening round of the Cumberland Falls Invitational.
Corbin (8-4) jumped out to an 18-8 lead against the Byrnes Rebels and never looked back in keeping the fourth place trophy. With the game tied at 4-4, Josh Smith and Josh Crawford scored six unanswered points for a 10-4 lead. Then two baskets by Crawford and two by freshman Madison Johnson allowed the Redhounds an 18-8 lead.
Crawford, who scored a season high 36 points took charge in the second period with five of the first seven points. Josh Smith had a basket in a 7-2 run by the Redhounds.
Byrnes was able to cut into the lead before the half, but went to the dressing room trailing the Redhounds, 29-20.
Corbin tried to pull away from the Rebels when the ‘Hounds went on a 10-2 run and led 48-30 with just over two minutes left in the period. Crawford had six points while Clayton Sewell and Deke Barley added a basket each.
The teams heated up the nets in the final period, tossing in 50 points between the two, but it was Corbin holding on for the 12-point win.
Valley takes 5-point win
In the opening game for the Redhounds, Corbin jumped out to a 9-4 lead with the help of two Isaac Wilson baskets, including a three pointer with four minutes in the first period. But, a 8-1 run saw the Wildcats regain the lead at the end of the opening quarter, 12-10.
The fast and furious second quarter saw 45 points scored with six ties and three lead changes.
With Corbin on top, 26-23, Jeremy Jackson tied the game for the final time with a three point shot. But, a basket by Rob Madon and a three pointer by Madison Johnson put the ‘Hounds ahead 33-28. Corbin led at the half, 35-32.
Shelby Valley came out of the gate quickly in the third quarter and scored the first 10 points for a 40-35 lead. It was a lead the Wildcats would not surrender.
Crawford led the way in scoring with 28 points while Madison Johnson dropped in 16 points.
Corbin downs Pineville
Corbin spotted Pineville a 6-0 lead then roared back to take a 82-72 win. Madison Johnson led the way for the ‘Hounds with 23 points while Josh Crawford tallied 18 points. Deke Barley dropped in 12 points to the win.
Dustin Day, the Lions 6-6 center, scored the first six points but a 19-2 run did the Lions in. Corbin came back for a 19-8 lead at the end of one quarter. Barley and Johnson hit three pointers in the rally.
Things didn’t get any easier for the Lions in the second period as Corbin would take a 38-20 lead on another three pointer by Johnson. Corbin led at the half, 41-24.
The lead would finally push over 20 points when Crawford hit one of two from the line with 2:39 on the clock.
Pineville went on a rally in the fourth period, outscoring the Redhounds, 15-9, and cut the lead to 68-58 but back to back baskets by Johnson quickly made it 73-58. The ‘Hounds never looked back.
