Corbin Takes 2nd

The Corbin Lady Redhounds held off a rally by the Lexington Dunbar Lady Bulldogs to become the only non-Lexington area team in the final four of the Berea Holiday Classic Monday night. The Lady Redhounds saw double digit leads disappear but held on to win, 47-43.
The Berea Lady Pirate Holiday Classic is like no other tournament in the state. It has become so successful and so many teams request to get in that they now field two tournaments simultaneously.
Tournament A featured the likes of Mason County, Somerset, Bell County, Clay County, Henry Clay and Bryan Station in its 16-team format while Tournament B had West Carter, Woodford County, Dunbar, Presentation, Pulaski County and Boyle County.
Bryan Station and Henry Clay entered the “A” finals Tuesday night when Woodford County got past Clark County and was scheduled to meet Corbin.
Corbin 47, Dunbar 43
Corbin almost walked through their third straight game in the tournament after running out to a 10-2 lead in the game. But Dunbar sophomore Ebonie Graham caught fire and led the Lady Dawgs to a 10-2 run as the teams went to the second period tied at 12-12.
Corbin took charge early in the second period, taking the ball to the hole. They were able to connect on several three point plays or draw the fouls. The Lady Hounds drew 12 free throws and connected on nine. Mikkah Rogers, Katie Akins and Jamie Bonza all had three point plays as Corbin outscored Dunbar 15-4 and led at the half, 27-16.

The Lady Redhounds tried to break the game open in the second half when they took a 33-20 lead on a Bonza three point goal, but Dunbar mounted a comeback and pulled within ten (37-27) at the end of three quarters.
The Dunbar defense picked up their game in the fourth quarter and almost stole the win from Corbin. The Lexington girls went on a 13-0 run and took a 40-37 lead when Beth Barr hit two free throws with 4:13 left in the game.
Then Corbin woke up as Akins finally got the first basket of the quarter with 3:24 left in the game to pull the Lady ‘Hounds within a point. After a miss by Dunbar, Morgan Barley calmly drilled a three pointer as Corbin regained the lead.
Tanisha Wilson then missed the front end of a bonus with 2:30 left and Akins grabbed the rebound. Barley knocked down a second three-ball and Corbin was back on top by five (45-40).
Dunbar fought back to within two (45-43) and Corbin was called for a ten-second violation, giving the ball back the Lady Dawgs. Dunbar missed and Brittany Jackson was fouled with :18 remaining. The Corbin sophomore hit both pressure packed free throws as Corbin took the win by four points.
“All three games have been big wins,” said Corbin coach Jennifer Parsons. “All three games have been similar in that that each team, West Carter, Clark County and Dunbar were all very athletic teams and all were very quick off the dribble.”
“To this point, other than Rockcastle County we have not played a team like that but we have been able to control the penetration and able to get leads on all three teams of 9-10 points,” said Parsons.
“We let up tonight and turned the ball over four straight times and they capitalized and got their momentum going and then we had to fight back,” said Parsons.
“I was very proud of my team, the ones on the floor and the ones on the bench,” she added. “We showed a lot of heart and character. Morgan Barley hit a couple of big shots at the end and Brittany Jackson sealed our lead hitting the two free throws. I felt like we had some people step up and hit the good shots. It was an excellent tournament win.”
Barley finished the win with 12 points and six rebounds while Rogers added 10 points. Akins finished with seven points and nine rebounds.
Corbin 59, Clark Co. 38
Barley, Rogers and Akins combined for 36 points as the Redhounds knocked off Clark County 59-38. Corbin raced out to a 15-9 lead at the end of the first quarter and led 29-19 at the half. The Lady Redhounds didn’t let up in this game and continued to roll past the Lady Cardinals. Corbin outscored Clark County, 19-15 in the third quarter then its defense stepped up and held the Lady Cardinals to four points in the fourth quarter.
Corbin tripled the Clark County scoring total with 12 fourth quarter points compared to Clark’s four.
Barley finished with 15 points while Rogers added 11 points. Akins tossed in 10 points and had 10 rebounds.
Corbin 60, West Carter 46
Mikkah Rogers scored a season high 21 points as the Lady Redhounds shocked West Carter, 60-46. The Lady Comets were one of the favorites to win the tournament before Corbin got the upset.
Corbin fell behind 6-2 in the first several minutes of the game but went on a 6-0 run to take the lead. Heather Clouse, Akins and Barley all had consecutive baskets to push Corbin ahead.
West Carter retook the lead with 6-2 run and led 12-10 before Corbin closed out the final two minutes with five unanswered points. Barley hit one of two free throws and Rogers had back to back baskets that put the Lady Redhounds ahead, 15-12 at the end of the first period.
The game stayed close in the second quarter as West Carter came back to tie the score at 17-all. Corbin then went on a 5-0 run and led 22-17. The Lady Redhounds led at the half, 25-22.
The third quarter proved to be the difference in this game as Corbin outscored the Lady Comets, 17-7. Back to back shots by Christina Sutton and Jamie Bonza pushed the lead into double digits, 37-27. Corbin led at the end of the quarter, 42-29.
The Lady Redhounds never let up and continued to build on its lead. Besides Rogers 21 points, Barley added 11 points.
