CORBIN SWEEPS JACKETS
Corbin’s Chad Brown hurls in a pitch during Monday’s 7-1 win at Don House Field.
Corbin snapped a six-game losing streak as the Redhounds beat the Williamsburg Yellow Jackets, 7-1 at Don House Field Monday afternoon. They completed the district sweep with a 14-4 win Tuesday at Briar Creek Park in Williamsburg.
The loss extended the Williamsburg losing streak to eight games as the teams were scheduled to meet again Tuesday afternoon at Briar Creek Park in Williamsburg.
“We played well,” Corbin Coach Rob Ledington said about his team’s victory over Williamsburg. “We threw strikes and we made the plays and had two errors. Other than that we did what we had to do.”
“I thought we swung the bats well today. We put seven runs on them and to be honest there were at least two situations were we had runners at second and third with less than two outs and did not execute runs in those situations,” Ledington said.
Scoring was a problem for both teams as they combined to leave 21 runners stranded in the game. Williamsburg left 11 runners while Corbin left 10 runners on the base paths.
The Redhounds (4-10) scored once in the first four innings to jump out to a 4-1 lead in the game. Junior Matt Jewell got things started in the home half of the first when he reached base on a throwing error by Williamsburg pitcher, Logan Hamblin. Jewell got two bases on the error. He quickly scored when senior Trace Vorbeck smacked a double into center field for the 1-0 lead.
In the second with one-out, junior Derek Terry hit a single over third. He went to second on a bunt by Keaton Burton. Hamblin was unable to pick up the ball in time to make a play. Zack Farley followed with the perfect bunt to load the bases. Jewell answered with a fly ball to center field, allowing Terry to come across the plate on the sacrifice.
Vorbeck stepped to the plate, but the EKU-bound hitter was given an intentional walk and the bases were loaded for Foley.
Hamblin came up with a big strike out to get out of the jam and the teams went to the third with Corbin on top, 2-0.
The Yellow Jackets (6-9) sent three players to the bases, but came up with only one run. Hunter Williams led off with a single in the hole at short and Vorbeck couldn’t make the play as Williams beat out the throw to first.
Donnie Bowlin flew out to right field before Michael Rose walked. Junior catcher Micah Purdie followed with a base hit over second and the bases were loaded. Sizemore drove in Williams with a fly ball to right field for the second out of the inning. Jonathan Teague popped out to Foley (catcher) to end the inning.
Marcus Kuhl led off the bottom of the third with a walk. Hamblin tried to pick off Kuhl, but the ball got away from Williams and Kuhl went to third.
Williamsburg Coach John Mountjoy sent Donnie Bowlin to the mound, but Hunter Grubb hit a ground ball to third that scored Kuhl for the 3-1 lead.
Corbin again added a run in the bottom of the fourth with one out. Jewell hit into an error off the glove of Teague at shortstop. Vorbeck followed with a double down the third base line as the runners got into scoring position. Foley’s base hit to center field allowed Jewell to pick up the fourth Redhound run of the game.
Vorbeck and Foley were left stranded when Bowlin struck out Kuhl and Grubb flew out to left field.
The Redhounds put the game away in the sixth with the help of Vorbeck, who hit a two-run dinger over the left field fence. Jewell hit a single over short before Vorbeck’s one-out home run.
Foley kept the rally going with a single to the third base side of the field. Junior Zach Fields, who later scored on a wild pitch from third, replaced him on the bases.
Williamsburg had chances to score in the sixth and seventh innings.
Hamblin led off the sixth by hitting into an error. Barton picked up a single before Vorbeck came on retire the side in order.
Brown came back to pitch the seventh inning for the Redhound and after getting Rose to pop out and Purdie to fly out, the junior pitcher walked the next three to load the bases. All three were left stranded when Barton grounded out to first base.
“We should have scored more, but I will take a 7-1 win,” Ledington said.
Corbin will be back in action Thursday when they take on the Middlesboro Yellow Jackets in Middlesboro. The Redhounds will play Tates Creek and Bryan Station, Saturday in Lexington. Corbin will play at Whitley County in their next district game Monday.
Williamsburg returns to action Thursday as Bell County comes to town. They will travel to Rockcastle County Friday evening.
Mountjoy’s team will host South Laurel in a district game Monday at 5:30 p.m.
