Corbin subway robbery suspect caught in Tennessee

Charles Gray, the Tennessee man accused of robbing the Subway Restaurant on April 10, was taken into custody in Knoxville Thursday night.

Corbin Police Detective Bill Rose said soon after it was announced that police were searching for Gary in connection with the robbery, an on-going string of tips about his possible location has be called in to Corbin Police.

A tip came in Thursday that Gray was in route to a particular Kroger Store in Knoxville.

“We actually received information from a couple of people that he would be there,” Rose said, adding that he contacted Knoxville Police and passed on the information.

Acting on that information, Knoxville Police confronted Gray at the store about 6:30 p.m. and took him into custody without incident.

In addition to the robbery in Corbin, Rose said Gray is wanted in connection with recent robberies at Subway restaurants in Knoxville and Sevierville, Tenn.

“I ran his criminal history and it is extensive,” Rose said, noting it includes multiple thefts and robberies and that Gray is currently on state probation in Tennessee.

Rose said he will be presented the robbery case to a Whitley County Grand Jury when it next meets on May 6. Indictments will be returned on May 20.

According to police, a single man entered the store on Cumberland Falls Hwy. about 10:08 p.m., brandished a handgun from inside his pants and demanded to be given all the money from the cash register. He made off with an undisclosed amount of money, driving away in a 2000 model silver Ford Taurus.

Police released a still photo from the store’s video surveillance camera to the media. Within hours of its publication, multiple individuals identified Gray as the man in the photo.

“The employee identified Gray as the robber,” Rose said.

At the time, police said Gray, who is from Colliersville, Tenn. was possibly headed toward Memphis.

It remains to be seen whether Gray’s charges in Tennessee will have to be resolved before he is returned to Kentucky.

Officials with Commonwealth Attorney Allen Trimble’s office said it is possible that Gray could be transported to Whitley County as needed for the case to move forward.

Gray remains in custody in Knoxville.
