Corbin’s 21-0 win over South Laurel Friday wasn’t the most impressive game of the Redhounds’ season, but it did run their record to 4-0 on the year.
"I didn’t think our intensity wasn’t were it needed to be," said Corbin Coach Steve Jewell. "South came out ready to play and played a good physical game. I didn’t think we answered the bell real well."
"I thought our kids played extremely flat," he added. "When we get into district play and down the road that type of attitude is not going to win the big games. I was very disappointed in the leadership that allowed our kids to come out like that."
Both teams battled soggy turf and rainy conditions, but in the end turnovers made the difference in the game. The Cardinals fumbled the ball three times, losing three of them, and a stingy Corbin secondary intercepted two passes (Mitchell Frederick grabbed for both) as it limited South Laurel to just 80 yards through the air.
On the offensive side of things, Corbin tallied 183 yards on the ground, 158 of which came via Caleb Watkins (86 yards, one touchdown) and Matthew Taylor (72), and 136 yards and two touchdowns through the air.
Though they turned the ball over on downs on their first possession of the game, Corbin was able to grab the lead with 34 seconds to play in the first quarter on an eight yard touchdown pass from Roman Mitchell to Vin Hoover to make the score 7-0 at the break.
The Cardinals were unable to mount any type of drive in the second quarter as Frederick grabbed the first of his two interceptions in the game to give Corbin the ball at their own 46-yard line.
Four plays later, the Redhounds were able to extend the lead to 14-0 thanks to a 15-yard touchdown pass from Mitchell to Taylor with 7:52 to play in the half.
Despite a pair of possessions for each team in the final eight minutes of the half, neither team was able to find the end zone before halftime as Corbin held onto it’s two touchdown lead.
The Cardinals final turnover of the game, which came at the tail end of a 40-yard run by Tyler Vaughn, gave Corbin a little breathing room, especially after. Vaughn seemed to be on the way to the end zone to make the score 14-7, but one of the last two Corbin defenders were able to punch the ball loose.
Corbin capitalized on the miscue and a 33-yard run by Caleb Watkins with 8:50 to play gave the Redhounds their final points of the game as they went on to win, 21-0.
