Corbin School Board may appeal reciprocal agreement decision to Franklin Circuit Court
Corbin Schools Superintendent Ed McNeel said he will present the Kentucky Board of Education’s decision on the non-resident agreement dispute with Knox County to the board Monday night.
"They will likely go into executive session to discuss it as it involves pending litigation," McNeel said of the board.
The question remains whether the board will elect to appeal the state board’s decision to Franklin Circuit Court.
Tuesday night, the state school board amended Kentucky Education Commissioner Terry Holliday’s decision to permit students already attending Corbin Independent or Knox County Schools under the reciprocal agreement to continue to do so, to include the siblings of those students.
In addition, the state board added its own emphasis to Holliday’s suggestion that the two sides engage in mediation in an attempt to find a permanent solution.
McNeel said the Corbin School Board will meet at 7 p.m. Monday at Corbin Middle School. The meeting is open to the public.

I understand both sides. Knox wants the kids, so they don’t have to close down another school, and in turn teachers get laid off. I can understand where Knox is coming from. In my opinion, both sides want it for the money, but honestly I think that Corbin is a better school. It came out in the paper the other day that Knox’s graduation rate was well below average while Corbin is near 100%. That’s enough proof right there. Period. A while back I knew a girl that attended Knox Central High School, her parents decided to transfer her to corbin in hopes of better education. This girl was making straight A’s at Central. She took a placement test, and FAILED it at Corbin. I can sympathize with Knox teachers, but there needs to be some accountability held with the teachers that DON’T teach. I couldnt tell you how many times I walked into class and didnt do ANYTHING the whole day but play cards. Corbin deserves to get the agreement in their favor because obviously they are doing thier job.
My kids go to Corbin because we LIVE in Corbin. I think if you want to go to our schools and not pay extra you should have to live here plain and simple. Some people just want a free ride.
I think that is the problem Corbin’s got here. When it gets to the court it will be a whole different ball game and Knox County will have the advantage because legally they are within their rights to end this agreement.
Corbin just wants to go against the grain (and against the law) and pretend they are doing it for the students when really what it boils down to is they need the $$ to pay for the bonds that built the new school and is paying for the expansion of the high school. IF they keep fighting this the little known fact is that the law is on the side of Knox county. Corbin should be happy with what they have and stop now. They can lose this.
knox co has a legal right to do this. they will win if it goes to court just wait and see.
Take it all the way to the Supreme Court! We are behind you all the way.
