Corbin Red 9-10 All-Stars win Area, 11-year-olds and Junior Leaguers begin District play Wednesday
To update the previous report on Area Little League All-Stars tournaments, the Corbin Red 9-10 year-old team was able to defeat North Laurel 1 Tuesday evening by the final score of 2-1, making them champions of Area 2 in 2016 and advancing them to this year’s District 4 tournament, which will get underway this weekend at Rotary Park.
North Laurel went up 1-0 in the top of the first inning Tuesday, and they held onto that lead until Corbin evened things up in the bottom of the third thanks to a Bradric Helton RBI that scored teammate Jeremiah Gilbert. The score remained knotted up at 1-1 until the bottom of the sixth inning, when a Conner Blackburn RBI single brought home Justin Troutman to give the Red team the win.
Troutman was phenomenal on the mound for Corbin Tuesday, giving up only two hits and striking out nine North Laurel batters in 4.2 innings of work. Gilbert pitched 1.1 innings, giving up one hit and striking out two.
Corbin Red will be back in action at Rotary Park later this week when they begin play in the District 4 tournament against Hazard-Perry on Saturday, July 9, at 7:00 p.m. Look in the 7/13 edition of the News Journal for full coverage.
Also, the Corbin 11-year-old All-Stars were set to begin play in their District tournament in Knox County Tuesday evening against Hazard-Perry, but storms forced that contest to be rescheduled to Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. The Corbin Junior League All-Stars will begin play in their District tournament as well Wednesday, going up against North Laurel at 8:00 p.m. at Corbin High School. Further updates will be posted once they become available.
