Corbin Police starting ‘Shop With a Cop’

After years of supporting the efforts of other departments, the Corbin Police Department is beginning its own Shop With a Cop program.

“We are trying to embrace community-oriented policing,” said Chief Rusty Hedrick.

This fiddle and picture autographed by country music legend Charlie Daniels will be the grand prize in the Corbin Police Department’s raffle to benefit Shop With a Cop. Tickets go on sale Monday.

Corbin Police Captain Coy Wilson, the department’s public affairs officer, said officers have two fundraisers in the works, a 5K run/walk in September, and a raffle in November.

The “5-0 5K” will be held on September 16 with the start/finish line set up on Depot Street.

Pre-registration deadline is August 31. The pre-registration entry fee is $20. After that, including race day, the fee is $25.

Overall awards will be given to the top finishing male, female, master and grandmaster, and in age groups: 6 and under, 7-9, 10-12, 13-15, 16-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, and 70 and older.

Wilson said police are also looking for businesses and organizations that would like to support the program by sponsoring the race.

“All of that money will go to Shop With a Cop,” Wilson said.

With the help of Gibson’s Music, the police department has secured a fiddle autographed by Charlie Daniels.

Hedrick said Officer Steve Meadors approached the owners of Gibson’s Music with the idea.

“They graciously donated the fiddle for the cause,” Hedrick said of Gibson’s.

Prior to Daniels’ concert in Corbin in May, Hedrick and Meadors had the opportunity to meet with the country music legend.

“We explained what we were doing and he graciously autographed it,” Hedrick said adding Daniels added an autographed photo to the package.

Hedrick said chances would go on sale Monday at a cost of $5 each. Sales will run through October 31 with the drawing set to take place on November 1.

Hedrick said a date for the Shop With a Cop event has not yet been scheduled.

However, officials at Walmart in Corbin have agreed to host it.

The department will be working with the Family Resource Center at Corbin Independent Schools and Social Services to find worthy children.

“We have some ideas,” Hedrick said when asked if there were any other fundraisers in the works.

Hedrick added that monetary donations to the program are always welcome and appreciated.

Donations may be brought to the police station at Corbin City Hall on South Main Street.
