Corbin Police investigating graffiti incidents at local restaurants, boat ramp

UPDATE: Shelby County man charged after turning himself in to police Thursday

A Shelby County man is facing multiple counts of criminal mischief in connection with four incidents of vandalism at local businesses.

Corbin Police Detective Coy Wilson said 25-year-old Joseph Walters was arrested Thursday afternoon at the police department.

“He came down and turned himself in because he knew we were looking for him,” Wilson said noting Walters is the man shown on the surveillance video.

Wilson said Walters admitted to using spray paint to graffiti four businesses, Bojangles’, Taco Bell, McDonald’s and the Shell gas station on Cumberland Falls Hwy.

“He said he was going through a tough time and didn’t have a good excuse for it,” Wilson added when asked if Walters said why he committed the acts.

“He said it was just him,” Wilson said when asked if anyone else was involved

While police initially suspected Walters may have been involved in a similar incident at the boat ramp off of Ky. 312, Wilson said Walters denied any involvement in that.

Walters has been charged with four counts of third-degree criminal mischief and is being lodged in the Whitley County Detention Center.

No court date has been set.

Three area businesses and the wall near the Ky. 312 boat ramp were the targets of graffiti overnight Monday and Corbin Police suspect the same perpetrators may have been involved.

Corbin Police Detective Coy Wilson said officers were called to the McDonald’s, Bojangles’ and Taco Bell restaurants on Cumberland Falls Hwy. Tuesday morning after the spray painted graffiti was discovered.

“It was just goofy stuff,” Wilson said of the work that included renditions of Disney’s Donald Duck character.

Video surveillance captured a white male subject sporting a beard and baseball style cap entering and leaving each of the stores.

Police said the subject is seen leaving each location in a light colored older model sedan believed to be a Nissan Maxima.

Wilson said the car appears to be silver or white in color.

Officers were called to the boat ramp later Tuesday morning after someone discovered the rock wall had also been spray painted.

“It appears to be the work of a female,” Wilson said noting “Tosha loves Dodd” is spray painted in several different colors.

Corbin Police are seeking to identify this individual in connection with a series of graffiti incidents overnight Monday at three area restaurants. Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 528-1122.
