Corbin pharmacy robbed at gunpoint
Two New Jersey men who robbed a downtown Corbin pharmacy at gunpoint Tuesday evening were captured in dramatic fashion shortly after committing the crime.
John P. Dutkiewicz, 31, and Gary Lloyd, 29, both of New Jersey, were charged with first-degree robbery by Corbin police for the incident and are currently in custody.
Police say Lloyd entered Cottongim Pharmacy on Main Street between 6:00 and 6:30 p.m. and brandished a weapon at employees. He stuffed numerous prescriptions pills, including Oxycontin, into a black bag and jumped into a four-door Honda Civic driven by Dutkiewicz who sped away from the scene.
Corbin police Major Bruce Rains said he arrived at the drug store shortly after the two left and was told by employees that the suspects turned down Kentucky Ave.
Police immediately scrambled in all directions in search of the vehicle.
Corbin Police Officer Rob Jones pulled in behind a suspicious four-door Honda Civic on Cumberland Falls Hwy and said a “gut feeling” guided him to follow the car, and eventually stop it on southbound I-75 near mile marker 24.
“It had New Jersey tags and it was about the same color … and I just thought man, that’s it.”
Jones questioned Dutkiewicz and said he acted strange and nervous during their conversation. Police later searched the vehicle and found Lloyd hiding in the trunk with a loaded Heckler and Koch .45 caliber semi-automatic handgun.
“I popped the trunk and the dude was in the back with a loaded .45 going ‘I give! I give!,'” Jones said. “It was wild. You have to think, if they had a plan that if the trunk was popped, he would come out firing … I’m lucky to be alive.”
Also in the trunk was a large, dark bag filled with the items the men allegedly took from the store.
“His gut feeling paid off,” Rains said. “It was some great police work.”
Jones was aided in the search and arrest by Officer Glenn Taylor, Jr.
Police. Captain Tim Helton is heading up the investigation.
Authorities say they plan to charge both men with first-degree robbery. Other charges may be added, but were not available at press time.
