The Corbin Redhounds and the North Laurel Jaguars will meet for the 13th Region Championship Monday night after winning semifinal games at The Arena in Corbin Saturday.
In the first game of the day, the Clay County Tigers got the early lead, but Redhounds came back in the second quarter and outscored the Manchester team for a 22-21 lead.
The Redhounds defense carried Corbin to the victory after holding the Tigers to eight third quarter points while scoring 14 points. Madison Johnson got untracked and led the Redhounds with 18 points. Matthew Taylor finished with 10 points as the ‘Hounds advanced to the championship game.
In a shocker, the North Laurel Jaguars down the South Laurel Cardinals. It was the first time in regional tournament play that the Jaguars have beaten the Cardinals.
The Cardinals had trouble shooting the ball in the first half as they dropped in only 25 percent from the field, 5-of-20. The didn’t hit any 3-point attempts.
North Laurel led 21-11 at the half and extended that lead to 15 points in the third quarter, 30-15.
South Laurel rallied in the fourth quarter behind the play of senior Matt St. John, but North Laurel held on for the win. Adrian Wardrup led the Jaguars with 20 points while Cody Likins was two-of-two from three-point range and hit 8-of-10 from the line for 18 points.
