Corbin native, UofC student, to intern for McConnell this fall

For a guy who loves politics, Corbin native Ryan Lawson has secured an ideal job this fall.

He will be interning for U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell in our nation’s capitol.

“Politics is my passion. I am always looking for ways I can help the community and better myself,” Lawson noted. “Senator McConnell is definitely a legislative expert and a leader for conservatives across the nation.”

Lawson said that he is looking forward to the internship, which will run from Sept. 5 – Dec. 15, and is “really excited” about it.

Lawson said that he found out that he had received the internship on Aug. 1 while he was attending 39th Annual National Conservative Student Conference, which was held at George Washington University, in Washington, D.C.

The conference is through the Young America Foundation. William F. Buckley, a journalist, who started the National Review in the 1960s, founded the foundation.

The conference featured various conservative experts that 200 student attendees heard from, including: Vice-President Mike Pence, Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich, Kellyanne Conway, and Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson among others.

Lawson, 19, is a graduate of Whitley County High School. He is currently attending the University of the Cumberlands where he is majoring in political science, and plans to graduate in 2019.

“Right now, I am wanting to go to law school after college,” Lawson noted.

Lawson has been employed at Forcht Bank since December where he is working part-time while he attends college.
