Corbin moves to 2-0 in district play with win over Raiders
The Corbin Redhounds cruised to a 57-6 win over district opponent McCreary Central Thursday night, improving their district record to 2-0, and moving to 6-1 on the year.
The Hounds utilized a spread formation early in the game, played at McCreary Central High School, and scored on their first possession when quarterback Corey Taylor found Jake Coppock on a 30-yard touchdown pass at the 10:41 mark. Lucas Canineu added on the PAT to give Corbin the 7-0 lead.
That lead was extended on the Hounds’ next possession when Coppock once again found his way into the end zone, this time on a four-yard touchdown run with 6:01 left in the first quarter. Another Canineu kick made it 14-0.
McCreary Central turned the ball over on downs, allowing Corbin to take a 21-0 lead four plays later thanks to an AJ Moore pass reception from Taylor that went five yards to pay dirt and another successful PAT attempt from Canineu.
The Raiders’ offense was driving at the end of the quarter, but another turnover on downs led to more points on the board for the Redhounds. This time Taylor found receiver Kenny Hopper on a ten-yard pass play for a touchdown with 10:51 left in the half. Another extra point extended the Corbin lead to 28-0.
McCreary was finally able to respond on their next drive, which ended with quarterback Ryan Jones hitting senior James Gregory in the end zone with a touchdown pass with 8:47 left in the second quarter. A failed two-point conversion made it 28-6, in favor of Corbin.
The Hounds responded right away when Cameron Sizemore, relieving Taylor at quarterback, threw a pass to Brian Nantz, who moved across the goal line from 11-yards-out with 7:28 on the clock. The PAT put Corbin up 35-6.
The Raiders moved the ball into Redhound territory with their next drive, but the Corbin defense forced another turnover. The McCreary defense came up with a big play of its own, however, intercepting a Sizemore pass three plays later, but Corbin’s William Reedy would snag an interception of his own before the final seconds ticked off the half.
The Hounds received the opening kickoff in the third quarter, and scored on their first drive via a Sizemore quarterback keeper at 8:47. Sizemore also ran in the two-point conversion to move the score to 43-6 and give us a running clock for the remainder of the contest.
Corbin’s Caleb Mitchell ran the ball down to the one-yard-line on their next offensive drive, setting up a Cameron Barton touchdown run as time expired in the quarter. Sizemore threw the ball to senior Trevor Browning for the successful two-point conversion, making it 53-6.
Corbin would score once more about midway through the fourth quarter on another Sizemore quarterback keeper. The conversion attempt failed, leaving a final score of 57-6.
Next week the Redhounds welcome Bell County to Campbell Field for senior night on Friday, October 17. For a preview of that contest, be sure to look in next week’s edition of The News Journal, available Wednesday, October 15.
