Corbin Motor Speedway set to resume racing Saturday

After three years of quiet and two weeks of practice the first official green flag is set to drop at Corbin Speedway since the track closed in 2014.

Jerry Brock, who reached an agreement with speedway owners on a one-year lease of the historic half-mile oval on Cumberland Falls Highway, said racing will begin Saturday, weather permitting.

While rain isn’t in the forecast, Brock said the temperatures are expected to top out in the mid 50s.

“We would like to have it in the 60s or 70s,” Brock said.

If the temperatures don’t cooperate, Brock said the racing may still occur, but be moved to the afternoon.

Brock said plans are to run five classes: late models, super street, pure sweet, front wheel drive and minicup.

As to how many cars he expects, Brock said he is taking a wait-and-see approach.

While 30 cars showed up at each of the practices, Brock said it is not a good basis for race attendance.

“A lot of them aren’t ready,” Brock said. “Some of them don’t want to practice.”

Brock said if 40 to 45 cars are brought out, it will be a successful opening.

As the weather warms, he said he expects the turnout to improve.

Admission will be $10 to the grandstands and $30 to the pits.

There is no official entry fee.

“It doesn’t matter whether you have a car or not,” Brock said. “You pay to get in the pits, you can bring your car and race.”
