Corbin man wins $80,000 playing Kentucky Lottery scratch-off
Corbin’s Jackie Smith drove away with more than just a tank of gas after a recent fill up. After purchasing a Kentucky Lottery scratch-off ticket at his local gas station, he won $80,000.
On the night of March 21, Smith stopped at Murphy USA on South Stewart Road in Corbin after work to fill up his vehicle. He bought a few scratch-off tickets while he was there.
“I didn’t have change, so I bought four scratch-off tickets,” he said.
Smith began to scratch off the first row of numbers on a $5 Big Cash Riches when he uncovered a 5X symbol in the first spot, indicating the prize amount is multiplied by five. Located below was $2,000.
He proceeded to scratch off the ticket uncovering more 5X symbols.
“I’d never seen eight, five times on one ticket. I scratched the prize
amounts off to find two thousand dollars under each one,” Smith said. His winnings totaled the game’s $80,000 top prize.
“I couldn’t believe it. I was shocked,” he said. “I finally won.”
Smith went straight home where he shared the news with his dad. “I stuck the ticket in his face and said, ‘I think I won $80,000,’” Smith said.
The next morning, he and his dad drove to lottery headquarters in Louisville where he received a check for over $56,000, after taxes.
Murphy USA will receive an $800 bonus for selling the winning ticket.
