Corbin man found passed out while he was supposed to be watching children

A Corbin man is in jail after police received a complaint that he was neglecting his children and he was discovered passed out in his apartment.

Garry Carter, 28, has been charged with possession of controlled substances, possession of drug paraphernalia and two counts of first-degree wanton endangerment following an investigation by Corbin Police Tuesday.

Police received a tip that two children at 405 Cleveland Street Apartments were being neglected. When officers arrived, the front door was ajar. Police entered and discovered Carter unconscious in the back bedroom with several different pills and drug paraphernalia visible throughout the room.

Sgt. Glenn Taylor obtained a search warrant for the residence and police seized several different types of drug paraphernalia, an unidentified white powdery substance and syringes.

The children were not at home at the time, but Social Services was contacted and placed them with family members pending the outcome of their own investigation into the case.

According to Corbin Police Department Public Affairs Officer Rob Jones, the children, two and seven-years-old respectively, apparently wandered out of the apartment while Carter was unconscious.

“This was happening pretty often, that’s why we got the call on it,” Jones said. “The kids just walked out and left while he was passed out.”

Carter remains in the Whitley County Detention Center on a $10,000 cash bond.

Taylor, K-9 Officer Coy Wilson and Patrolman Jeff Hill all participated in the investigation.
