Corbin man facing robbery charge over stolen fireworks
A Corbin man has been charged with robbery after Laurel County Sheriff’s deputies say he made off with approximately $800 worth of fireworks, attempting to run over the business owner in the process.
According to Sheriff John Root, Deputies Shawn Jackson and Shannon Jones arrested 33-year-old Daniel Bennett in connection with the incident at a fireworks stand on Ky. 312 in Keavy Tuesday night.
Deputies were called to the scene just after 8 p.m. in response to a theft complaint at the stand set up outside the Bait Bucket store.
Multiple witnesses had reported seeing the theft in progress and had notified the female business owner who came to the scene.
“When the owner approached the suspect, he attempted to use force and while attempting to flee almost ran over the female victim/owner,” Root stated. “The suspect sped away from the scene almost striking another vehicle.”
Deputy Gilbert Acciardo, the department’s public affairs officer, said deputies tracked, the suspect, later identified as Bennett, down and took him into custody about 3 a.m. Wednesday.
However, they were unable to recover any of the fireworks.
Bennett was initially charged with first-degree robbery and first-degree wanton endangerment and transported to the sheriff’s office to be processed.
While at the sheriff’s office, Root stated that Bennett became combated with deputies, reportedly attempting to kick them, damaging the wall and bench in the booking room.
As a result, Bennett was also charged with third-degree criminal mischief, menacing and resisting arrest.
“This subject had to be physically escorted to the Laurel County Detention Center,” Root stated.
Bennett is being held in the detention center on a $25,000 cash bond.
