Corbin man facing numerous charges after leading police on high-speed chase

A Corbin man is facing multiple charges, including DUI, after leading vehicle enforcement on a high-speed pursuit through the streets of Corbin Thursday night.

Thirty-five-year-old Roy L. Garland was arrested after running his 1998 Nissan Frontier pickup truck off the road at the railroad crossing near Moore Hill Ave.

Kentucky State Police Division of Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officer Steve Douglas, public affairs officer at Region Four in London, said the chase began about 11 p.m. when Officer Rob Mitchell tried to make a traffic stop on the Nissan after observing it make an improper left turn onto U.S. 25E when exiting the Spur Oil gas station.

Douglas stated that the driver, later identified as Garland, complied and stopped near Interstate Auction on U.S. 25W. Two passengers got out of the vehicle and Garland fled the scene at a high rate of speed.

“Officer Mitchell pursued the vehicle on U.S. 25W, through parts of Corbin at which time the suspect was driving reckless, turning off his headlights, and driving on the wrong side of the road,” Douglas stated.

The pursuit continued into Knox County and through the Moore Hill community, coming to an end when the truck ran off the roadway.

Garland is charged with driving under the influence of alcohol – aggravating circumstances, first-degree fleeing or evading police in a motor vehicle, reckless driving, improper turning, disregarding a stop sign, resisting arrest, license to be in possession, failure to produce insurance card, and failure to wear seat belts, and lodged in the Laurel County Detention Center.
