Corbin man dead after Friday shooting
A Corbin man died early Friday afternoon during a shooting near the Tennessee state line, leading to a Oak Ridge, Tenn. resident being charged with second-degree manslaughter.
The shooting happened about 12:30 p.m. nearly 17 miles west of Williamsburg on Ayers Road very close to the Tennessee state line.
Keith Edward Mason, 41, of Oak Ridge, fatally shot Robert Wayne Vanover, 60, of Corbin, Harrell said.
The Whitley County Coroner’s Office pronounced Vanover dead at the scene. He was apparently shot three times, once in the face, once in the chest and once in the lower part of the body, Harrell noted.
"We know they had a previous problem," Harrell said about the reason for the shooting.
Harrell said that the two men knew each other prior to the shooting, and coincidentally were at the scene of the shooting, which was in the road.
He said there was no indication it was a planned meeting.
Family members told Harrell Vanover was in the area taking some groceries to his son.
The Whitley County Sheriff’s Department is continuing the investigation, and was assisted at the scene by the Campbell County, Tennessee Sheriff’s Department, the Whitley County Coroner’s Office and Whitley County EMS.
