Corbin man charged with kidnapping, assault will return to court Tuesday

A Corbin man charged with kidnapping and assault is scheduled to return to court Tuesday for a preliminary hearing to determine whether the case will be presented to the grand jury.

Twenty-one-year-old Charles Shores III appeared via video in Laurel District Court Wednesday for arraignment on the charges stemming from the incident Tuesday night off of Hawk Creek Road.

Judge Wendell “Skip” Hammons set Shores’ bond at $50,000 cash. Hammons ordered that should Shores be released on bond, he be placed on home incarceration pending the outcome of the case.

Laurel County Sheriff’s deputies were called to the scene on John R. Jones Road off of Hawk Creek Road about 8:15 p.m. following complaints of a domestic incident.

“The neighbors said they could hear the commotion,” said Deputy Gilbert Acciardo, the department’s public affairs officer, explaining that Shores had allegedly choked and slapped the woman.

When deputies arrived on the scene, they learned that Shores had reportedly fled the scene with the woman’s seven-month-old baby boy and he had stated he would kill the child before running off into the woods.

Deputies led by Captain Chuck Johnson and Sergeant Robbie Grimes, began combing the area for Shores, who was reportedly wearing only a pair of boxer shorts.

Approximately 9 p.m, neighbors reported finding the baby in a ditch.

“We don’t know why he left the baby, but we think it was hindering him from eluding us,” Acciardo said adding the child was unharmed but was taken by ambulance to Saint Joseph London Hospital as a precaution.

Acciardo said residents throughout the area called in frequent reports when they saw Shores.

“Everybody knows everybody out that way,” Acciardo said.

Two of the residents saw Shores and were able to distract him by offering him something to drink, while they contacted law enforcement.

Acciardo said when Shores saw the lights of the cruisers approaching he attempted to run again. However, the residents refused to let him leave.

“When we got out, the fight was on,” Acciardo said adding that Shores continued to struggle with deputies before he was taken into custody.

Shores was charged with kidnapping of a minor, fourth-degree assault – domestic violence, first-degree wanton endangerment and resisting arrest.

In addition, Shores was served with three outstanding warrants out of Whitley County charging him with failure to appear in court on charges of possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, operating a motor vehicle on a suspended/revoked operator’s license, and numerous traffic charges.

Deputies Acciardo, Travis Napier and Daniel Grigsby, along with Bailiff Tony Anders also participated in the search and capture.
