Corbin man charged in high-speed pursuit indicted in Knox County
A Corbin man arrested in May after leading state police on a high-speed chase through Corbin was indicted Friday in Knox Circuit Court.
Thirty-seven-year-old Jason Sevier was indicted on charges of first-degree fleeing or evading police, first-degree wanton endangerment, first-degree criminal mischief, second-degree criminal mischief, speeding, leaving the scene of an accident, operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of intoxicants – second offense, resisting arrest, no insurance, failure to wear seat belt and second-degree persistent felony offender in connection with the May 12 incident that began when Trooper Chris Saunders attempted to stop Sevier for expired tags on his Toyota Camry.
Saunders stated in the arrest citation that he attempted to make the stop about 9:15 p.m. on Engineer Street, but that Sevier accelerated, ran a stop sign and continued to flee.
The chase continued up Engineer Street and then onto Master Street.
As the chase continued east on Master Street, Saunders said Sevier used the turning lane to pass several cars before turning onto South Commonwealth Ave and then onto Ky. 1232.
“We proceeded until we got to Blue Bonnet Circle where he drove through a yard and into the field behind Falls (Legacy) Ford,” Saunders wrote in the arrest citation. “He struck a car in the parking lot then continued through the lot, jumping the curb that separates the gas station from Falls Ford onto U.S. 25E where he drove across the median and started east in the west bound lane.”
With traffic coming at them, Saunders used a pit technique to spin the Camry and send it into the median where it came to a stop.
Saunders said Sevier got out of the car and attempted to run back across 25E.
Saunders gave chase, finding Sevier in a creek. After a short scuffle, Saunders deployed his Taser. When Sevier continued to resist, Saunders said he struck him several times in the back of the head with a closed fist until he became compliant,” Saunders wrote in the arrest report.
When Sevier attempted to jerk away again, Saunders stated that he took him to the ground.

A Laurel County grand jury returned indictments on August 19.
Among them was a Lily man who was indicted on charges of arson and wanton endangerment for allegedly setting fire to a residence with three people inside.
Fifty-four-year-old Robert Leroy Brummett was indicted Friday on one count of first-degree arson and three counts of first-degree wanton endangerment for allegedly setting fire to Harold Carter’s residence on R. Carter Lane off of Ky. 552. on June 26.
Laurel County Sheriff’s Deputy Gilbert Acciardo, the department’s public affairs officer, said Brummett and Carter had reportedly gotten into a verbal altercation that night.
“We don’t know what they were fighting about,” Acciardo said.
At some point, Brummett had threatened to throw a concrete block through the window of Carter’s truck. Carter then ordered Brummett to leave his property.
Acciardo said Carter went inside the residence to watch television with his friend and four-year-old daughter.
However, Brummett allegedly soaked a towel in gasoline, shoved it under the door and lit it on fire.
“A neighbor came over when the fire started,” Acciardo said. “The neighbor and Carter used a water hose to put out the fire.”
“There was very minimal damage,” Acciardo added
Acciardo said a witness identified Brummett as being at the scene when the fire started.
Deputy Shannon Jones was called to investigate.
Jones discovered Brummett had an outstanding warrant for failure to appear in court in Lincoln County, Oklahoma on a charge of possession of a controlled dangerous substance.
Brummett was taken into custody on the warrant and Jones elected to present the arson case to the grand jury.
