Corbin man arrested with counterfeit $100 bills

Whitley County Sheriff’s deputies seized these two counterfeit $100 bills Thursday morning.

A Corbin man is behind bars after being arrested Thursday morning with two
counterfeit $100 bills.

Whitley County Sheriff’s Sgt. Todd Shelley charged Roy Lee Wells, 54, with
two counts of first-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument and
lodged him in the Whitley County Detention Center.

Shelley initially received a complaint about a man allegedly trying to
pass a counterfeit $100 bill at Hometown Bank of Corbin, according to the
Whitley County Sheriff’s Department.

Wells was arrested about 10:23 a.m. in the parking lot of Bell’s Country
Store about five miles south of Corbin off US25W.

Deputies allegedly found two counterfeit $100 bills in Wells possession.

Both bills had the same serial number, according to the sheriff’s
department.

Wells also allegedly tried to pass one of the counterfeit bills at a
Circle K store, according to the sheriff’s department.

Deputy Cody Harrell assisted with the investigation.

The sheriff’s department is continuing the local investigation into
counterfeit $100 bills. In this case, the counterfeit bills did include
the purple vertical ribbon. Also, detection pens indicated that the bills
were not authentic. In a recent case, the counterfeit bills did not
include the vertical ribbon and were not detected by indicator pens.

the investigation.
