Corbin man allegedly shoots girlfriend five times

Michael Johnson was charged with attempted murder on Oct. 26.
A Corbin man allegedly shot his longtime girlfriend five times during a domestic dispute early Wednesday morning.
Laurel County Sheriff’s Detective Kyle Gray arrested Michael Dean Johnson, 48, of Lon Chadwell Road, at his residence about 12:42 a.m. and charged him with attempted murder-domestic violence and first-degree wanton endangerment.
Johnson has been lodged in the Laurel County Detention Center where he is being held in lieu of a $100,000 cash bond.
The incident occurred on Lon Chadwell Road about nine miles south of London where deputies were dispatched to a domestic violence complaint that reportedly involved a male subject who had shot his live-in girlfriend.
When deputies arrived, they located Johnson in the bedroom along with the victim, who had been shot five times in the chest and abdomen, according to a sheriff’s department release.
The victim told deputies that the two had been arguing earlier in the day and that Johnson had backed her into the corner of the bedroom and shot her, the release stated.
Deputy Gilbert Acciardo, public affairs officer at the sheriff’s department, said that authorities aren’t sure what prompted the argument and know only that it took place earlier in the day and then apparently erupted again late that evening.
The victim and the couple’s five-year-old son were asleep in the bedroom prior to the altercation occurring.
West Knox Volunteer Fire Department set up an emergency-landing zone where an emergency medical helicopter landed to transport the victim to the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington for treatment.
“Indications are she will survive,” Acciardo said.
A pistol was recovered at the scene that deputies believe was the weapon used in the shooting, Acciardo said.
Deputies assisting at the scene, included: Sgt. Larry Parrott, Deputy Shawn Jackson and Deputy Daniel Grigsby. Also assisting at the scene were Constable Chris Webb and Ambulance Inc. of Laurel County.
