Corbin, Lynn Camp, Whitley County and Williamsburg all have home games

All four local high school teams will be in action at home this week.

Williamsburg pushes back against Somerset offense in Friday’s 21-14 win over the Briar Jumpers.

Coming off of their bye week, the undefeated Corbin Redhounds will host class 6A Simon Kenton out of northern Kentucky.

The Pioneers are 1-4 on the season with the losses coming to Oldham County, Highlands, Southwestern and Beechwood.

Corbin is two weeks removed from the 52-6 victory over Somerset in which the Redhounds put up 388 yards of total offense while holding the Briar Jumpers to 98 yards.

Coach Tom Greer said the Pioneers are going to offer another challenge for the Redhounds’ defense, noting that they are leading class 6A in most offensive categories.

“Their quarterback (Chase Crone) is a great player,” Greer said. “Our defense will have its hands full.”

On the offensive side, Greer said the Redhounds must be able to put points on the board, noting that, despite the record, Simon Kenton is averaging 35 points a game.

“If they get a lot of offensive snaps, it is going to be a war,” Greer said.

Greer said with the week off, the Redhounds are coming into the game healthy and ready to go.

Kickoff is set of 7:30 p.m. at Campbell Field.

Whitley County Colonels

The Whitley County Colonels hung in with Pulaski County last Friday at home, trailing 21-14 at halftime, but the Maroons pulled away in the second half for the 35-20 victory.

Colonels’ quarterback Caden Petrey completed eight passes for 160 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.

Sam Harp and Trevor Downs each caught one of the touchdown passes.

The Colonels struggled in the ground game, as seven ball carriers combined for 46 total rushing yards.

Christian Grubb led the Colonels’ defense with 14 tackles. Tye Hamblin added eight tackles and an interception.

“We played extremely hard,” said Coach Zeke Eier noting that he has never questioned his players dedication and determination.

Whitley County will be back at home Friday night to host Collins High School out of Shelbyville.

The Titans are 4-1 on the season after winning at Madison Southern last Friday, 27-19.

Quarterback Kenyon Goodin completed 13 passes for 233 yards while running 23 times for 95 yards and three touchdowns.

“They are really athletic with a quarterback that can run or throw it,” Eier said. “We are going to have to contain him.”

Offensively, Eier said Whitley County will again be looking to establish the running game.

“We have to execute at a high level,” Eier said.

Williamsburg Yellow Jackets 

Coming off of a 21-14 win over Somerset last Friday, Coach Jerry Herron, Jr’s Williamsburg Yellow Jackets will face another tough test as undefeated Sayre comes to Finley Legion Field.

The Lexington-based school is coming off of a 42-0 victory at home against Harlan last Friday.

Herron threw a big wrinkle at the world against Somerset as the Jackets ran for more than 300 yards, including a 55-yard touchdown run by receiver turned running back Jayden Rainwater.

“We knew going into the game that the keys would be us being able to run the ball and to stop the run,” Herron said.

Herron said against Sayre, the Jackets will be looking to take what the defense gives them in terms of being able to run or pass the ball.

Defensively, Herron said that Williamsburg must have a repeat of the Somerset game where the Jackets knew their assignments and made plays.

The Lynn Camp Wildcats put their first points of the 2021 season on the board last Friday in a 38-6 loss at home to Cumberland Gap, Tennessee.

Running back Brody Lane scored the touchdown as he led the Wildcats with 68 yards on the ground.

Lynn Camp will be back at home Thursday night against Jellico in what will be a makeup game of the previously scheduled home opener on Aug. 20.
