Corbin loses three in SWIT

Corbin’s Derek Terry puts the tag on a South Warren runner.
The Corbin baseball team traveled to western Kentucky last weekend to play in the South Warren Invitational. The Redhounds had trouble on the mound, at the plate and in the field, losing three games to Logan County, South Warren and Greenwood.
“We have struggled with errors all season long,” Ledington said. “There are two critical things that have been hurting us all season and that is errors and we are really struggling to run the bases. We have had a lot of base running mental lapses in key situations that have really taken us out of some ball games.”
The errors and the base running mistakes continued in the three games at South Warren.
Corbin Coach Rob Ledington would like to forget about Friday’s game against Logan County. The Redhounds booted the ball all over the field in a 20-0 loss in five innings.
The Redhounds did come out focused in Saturday’s first game against the host school, South Warren, the eventual champion. “We competed well in this game and did not have an error,” Ledington said. “But, we did have the base running mistakes that cost us from having a big inning.”
Corbin gave up a run in the bottom of the first and trailed 1-0 until the top of the fifth when junior Derek Terry drilled a double down the third base line. Andrew Jones’ sacrifice bunt moved Terry to third base. Terry scored when South Warren catcher Jacob Lewis tried to pick off the Corbin runner.
However, the Spartans answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning and took a 3-1 lead in the game.
In the top of the seventh the Redhounds rallied to take a 4-3 lead on five base hits. Terry and Jones opened the inning with back-to-back singles. Terry, however, was picked off at second base by pitcher Stephan Evans.
Jones moved over to second on a ground out by Zack Farley. Matthew Jewell followed with a single to shallow right field and left Redhound runners at first and third. Jewell took off for second and Evans was called for a balk, sending Jones home.
Kevin Goins followed with a single and Corbin again had runners on the corners. Brady Foley came through with a RBI single to put the Redhounds ahead, 4-3. Foley went to second on the play to the plate then went to third on a passed ball. As the South Warren pitcher went back to the mound, Foley tried to steal home, but was thrown out to end the inning.
It was the Spartans turn to rally in the bottom of the inning. The host scored two runs to get the win on a pinch hit double by Jacob Boose.
Greenwood 17, Corbin 5: The Gators scored nine runs in the top of the ninth to pull away from the Redhounds and take a 17-5 win.
Greenwood struck first in the top of the first inning with one run. But, the Redhounds answered and evened the score in the bottom half of the inning. Jewell was hit by a pitch with one out. He stole second then scored on a fielder’s choice and error by the Greenwood shortstop.
The Gators scored three runs in the top of the second to take the lead for good. All three runs came after Austin Combs had retired the first two batters of the inning. An infield error and a walk led to the first two runners reaching base. Junior Jake Riley then stepped to the plate and delivered a two-run single to right centerfield. Chris Hardin followed with a triple and the Gators had a 4-1 lead.
Corbin never really recovered and fell behind 13-1 when the Gators scored nine runs on five hits in the top of the third.
The Redhounds did score three in the bottom of the fourth. Metzger, Hunter Grubb and Keaton Burton scored for Corbin. Jones had a two-run single in the inning.
