(Story by Trevor Sherman)
The Corbin Lady Hounds softball team won their first ever 13th Region title Tuesday evening picking up a 3-0 win over the North Laurel Lady Jags.
The win over North improves the Lady Hounds to 20-13 on the year, and advances them to this year’s KHSAA state championship tournament, which kicks off later this week in Lexington at the University of Kentucky’s John Cropp Stadium.
Corbin will play the Region 6 champion Louisville Holy Cross Lady Cougars in the opening round of the state tourney. The Cougars come into the contest with an overall season record of 21 wins and 14 losses. First pitch is scheduled for Friday, June 3, at 11 a.m.
The 50th District champion softball Hounds opened up regional tournament play at Lincoln Memorial University last week with a convincing 13-3 victory over Lynn Camp. They followed up that performance Monday evening, shutting out Middlesboro by a final score of 14-0.
The Lady Jags defeated South Laurel and Knox Central in the bottom half of this year’s tournament bracket to advance to the title game. Both games were won by a final score of 4-3.
This was the third time that the Redhounds and Jaguars played each other this season. North bested Corbin on both previous occasions, winning 12-6 at Corbin High School back on April 19, and pulling out a 3-1 victory at NLHS on May 10.
