Corbin High School adding wrestling teams
Corbin fans will have new winter sports teams to cheer for as boys and girls wrestling is being added as a varsity sport.
The Corbin Board of Education approved the creation of a high school wrestling program during a special called meeting Friday.
“We had the interest,” said Corbin Athletic Director Tackett Wilson noting that approximately 30 students, both boys and girls, turned out initially and the number has now grown to about 40.
Kentucky high school wrestling has 14 weight classes in boys ranging from 106 pounds to 285 pounds.
Girls’ wrestling has 12 weight classes from 100 pounds to 235 pounds.
Wilson said the next step is to hire coaches for each team.
The board approved a head coach and assistant coach for the boys and girls’ teams, respectively.
“We hope to have the coaches in place in the new few weeks,” Wilson said.
Corbin will be in Region 7, which includes: Wayne County, Somerset, McCreary County, Whitley County, Barbourville, Knox Central, Bell County, Harlan County, Boyle County, Danville, Madison Southern and Madison Central.
Teams may compete in their first meet after Nov. 22 with the season running through Feb. 5.
Region tournaments are scheduled for the week of Feb. 6 through 12.
Semi-state is scheduled for Feb. 13 through 19.
The state tournament will be held the week of Feb. 20 through 26.
